This Sunday, 21st March, is the 5th Sunday in Lent and we are all at home. Our churches are closed, ( not for much longer, hopefully) and we are keeping ourselves safe because of the Pandemic. We want to be together in our churches and communities again and yet we find ourselves pushed out into the desert. Jesus went into the desert, forty days and forty nights and is tempted by the devil. We’ve been sent into the desert because of the virus, it is a very cold and lonely place. In the Gospel of John, we read about the raising of Lazarus from the dead. Jesus visits the home of Mary and Martha and in the midst of their grief, Jesus says to Martha, “I am the resurrection and the life, if anyone believes in me, even though they die, and whoever lives by believing in me will never die”.

The raising of Lazarus from the dead is a sign that points towards the joy of Easter and Jesus’ resurrection, and the promise of new life. We renew our hope in Jesus who helps us to walk towards Easter, through the desert and know the joy of being raised from the dead and our life as children of God.
