As we journey through this period of Lent with our eyes fixed on Easter, we seek a ‘closer walk with God.’ The closer we can get to God the more our understanding of Him increases. To be in His Presence is an uplifting experience.
It enables us to gain insight into the life which God would wish us to live.
A life in which we worship God, our Creator Father, when our every thought and action is worthy to be offered to Him.
The world would be transformed when decency and honesty were the norm. When those who are in positions of power and influence see themselves as having a sacred trust,. being servants of their Lord and of the people, not exhibiting any vanity and being free from corruption.
As they would be working for the common good they would be following
Christ’s command to treat others as they would expect others to treat them. We would find ourselves living in a world of Harmony;
where devotion to God and respect for others would be the rule of the day.
What a glorious prospect that is..
During these weeks of Lent, this period leading up to Good Friday and Easter, we can turn our minds to consider the question ”Who is this Jesus?’ .Is He just Jesus, the carpenter of Nazareth ?
Is He the King of the Jews or Is He the Christ, the Son of God ?
As He taught with authority, and acted with authority, where did that authority come from ?
The crucifixion was preceded by a constant clash with authority.
The question ‘Who is this man that has come among us?’ had to be answered by the disciples, by the people at large,
by the Pharisees and the Sadducees, by the High Priest and by Pontius Pilate. Jesus consistently did things and said things which forced people to face this question, one way or another.
The disciples would have seen the stilling of the storm as more than just an exercise of power, while the waves of the sea are mighty, the Lord of dwells on high, is even mightier. No wonder the disciples were staggered when Jesus said, ‘ Be still ‘ and the wind dropped and there was calm.
We should be just as staggered if it happened now..
Yet they knew what had happened, as they had when Jesus had turned the water into mine at Cana which was the beginning of the signs that Jesus did. Jesus chose His disciples first and had then led them to faith.
When the disciples decided to follow Jesus, they had already made an act of faith in this Man, who spoke with authority, performed miracles and who showed God’s love for all people.
In God’s created world there is a pattern and an order to life. We rely on that order in everything we do. It gives us a sense of security and of purpose.
The more that we think of God as Creator, the more our knowledge of Him increases. The heavens declare the glory of God. The laws of nature which set the pattern and order of creation, point to the reliability of God. He does not change with the passing years or different circumstances
It is a considerable comfort to Christians to know that their lives are in the hands of a Creator God who cares for them, provides for them, who shows His love for all people when He sent His Son, Jesus Christ into the world, to show us how He wants us to live, for our benefit.
