The Three Wise Men made their long journey to Worship. That is what they told Herod. To Worship means to declare the worth of the One we worship. In bringing a gift of gold, the Wise Men were offering their tribute to the King of Kings. It was a simple gift but its meaning was clear. It was a pledge of allegiance as much as a gift.
When we make our offerings, week by week, they are a tokens of our allegiance. They do not make God richer, they do however, enable the Church to carry out God’s work broadcasting the Good News of Christ’s salvation, feeding the hungry and providing for the poor. Our giving of money is part of our prayer, ”Thy Kingdom come….on earth.”. As we acknowledge Christ’s sovereignty, we too will bring our gift of gold..
