The story of Jesus raising Lazarus of Bethany from the dead is told only in St John’s Gospel and is one of the dramatic stories told in The Bible..
When Jesus arrived at the tomb, to everyone’s horror He ordered the stone of the tomb to be rolled away. This went against almost everything they stood for. Lazarus had been dead for several days and it would be horrible.
To have contact with the corpse would make them unclean.
Their convictions, tradition, prejudice were all affronted, yet they did as Jesus asked and Lazarus was restored to life.
There must have been something about the way He asked them that they
were able to overcome their prejudice.
They trusted and in doing what Jesus asked, the power of God was released.
In every age Christians are called to trust and obey, as we sing in the words of the hymn
”Trust and obey, for there’s no other way, to be happy in Jesus but to trust and obey”
