” BE PERFECT, THEREFORE, AS YOUR HEAVENLY FATHER IS PERFECT ”
Those who say that they find Christian doctrine difficult and all that matters is living a Christian life should read the Sermon on the Mount
” Love your enemies ”;
” If a man takes your shirt, give him your coat as well ”;
” If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles”.
What are we to make of that ?
Is Jesus just exaggerating and if so, how much do we tone it down ?
If you see two thugs molesting a woman do you just stand by and do nothing?
Is the Sermon on the Mount meant to be a law, a new law, for everybody ?Does it make sense ? Lots of questions but what about the answers ?
As a code of Christian law, the Sermon on the Mount does not give us the certain guidance we need. Life is full of conflicting loyalties and it gives us little guidance.
What it does give us is an understanding that we are at all times to be concerned for the well-being of others, even though at time we may not feel all that well disposed towards them.
It rests for Christians upon the simple truth that their Heavenly Father does just that !
